While most people believes that sugarcane is originary from South America, the truth is that this vegetable comes from India and New Guinea. On the 5th century b.C it was described as "a cane that produces honey with no bees intervention". It was introduced in Andalucia by arabs around the 8th century, and Christopher Columbus was the one who first brought sugarcane to the Caribbean during his second voyage to the Americas; initially to the island of Hispaniola (modern day Haiti and the Dominican Republic).
However, despite that American sugarcane came from Spain, the truth is that it can hardly be grown in any parts of Europe. As many other exotic farmings (like European avocados or custard apples) the only European area were sugarcane can be grow is the Axarquía in Malaga, and Costa Tropical in Granada, and the only European company that produces sugarcane molasses is Ingenio de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, that has been producing sugarcane molasses for generations.
Sugarcane molasses are usually known in Málaga and Granada as sugarcane honey because of its taste and texture, despite no bees are involved on it´s production. That´s why it is also called vegan honey, as it is a perfect substitute for those that does not want to eat animal sourced foods.
This honey always present on my grand mom´s cupboard. It can be served with fresh burgos cheese, cotage cheese, citric fuits, natural yogurt, milk curd...
